Who we help  /  Partner with us
For insurers, NGOs, community groups and researchers

Better coasts are a team effort

We work with partners who share our aim of protecting and regenerating coastlines - to reduce risk, conserve habitats and build the evidence on what works.

Ways to work with us

Three kinds of partner

Insurers and risk

Less exposure, over the long term

Reefs take energy out of waves before they reach property. We want to work with insurers to measure that, and to reflect it in how coastal risk is priced.

What we offer

Site modelling of storm and wave exposure, before and after a reef, plus monitoring data over time.

What we are looking for

Pilot sites, co-funding and referrals to exposed clients.

NGOs and community groups

Protection that conserves

A cost-effective way to protect coastal habitats, heritage and the communities who depend on them, with more visitors as a bonus.

What we offer

Reef design, community build days, and data you can use in funding bids and reports.

What we are looking for

Sites that need help, joint funding bids and local partners.

Universities and researchers

A reef is a living laboratory

Every CCell reef is instrumented. That makes it a working site for research on materials, marine ecology, acoustics and coastal processes.

What we offer

Access to reef sites, CCell Sense data, and joint grant applications.

What we are looking for

Independent validation, published results and research partners.

Collaborate on research
What we bring to a partnership

Field sites, hardware and engineers who like hard questions

Real field sites

Working reefs in Mexico and test sites in the UK, from warm Caribbean water to the cold Irish Sea.

Mineral accretion

Our electrochemical process grows limestone on reef structures, the same minerals corals and shellfish build with.

Monitoring and data

CCell Sense logs power, environment and growth, with sensors added as your study needs.

Modelling and engineering

Hydrodynamic modelling, structural design and fabrication, so your experiment survives the sea.

What we have learned with our partners

University of Bath

Reefs grown on bamboo

The BEARS project developed coatings that let rock grow on bamboo, opening the way to lighter, bio-based reefs.

Exmouth Mussel and Cleveland Steel

Reused steel as reef

ARMOUR showed reclaimed steel can make effective reefs, cutting embodied carbon by about 45% compared with new steel.

Listening to the reef

Working with Cornell's conservation bioacoustics team on how reef sounds can track marine life.

Open data

Data that partners can build on

Our reefs carry CCell Sense, our own monitoring system, with environmental sensors. With the site owner's agreement, that data can support research, conservation and risk work.

  • Marine life surveysRegular underwater surveys, with AI-assisted fish detection in development
  • Water conditionsTemperature, pH, turbidity, waves and currents
  • Long-term recordsLongitudinal analyses of how the reef and the coast change

Shared goals

Where our work meets the global goals

Many partners report against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our work overlaps most with these.

Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life below waterLife below water

Restoring marine and coastal ecosystems, and building marine research capacity.Targets 14.2 and 14.a

Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate actionClimate action

Strengthening coastal resilience to climate-related hazards.Target 13.1

Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable communitiesSustainable cities and communities

Reducing losses from water-related disasters and protecting natural heritage.Targets 11.4 and 11.5
